AEDs are supplied across UC campus as for a person experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. You can also call UC Security (0800 823 637) who will bring a first aider and an AED to the situation.
A defibrillator often referred to as an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) is a small device that gives a safe electric shock to someone having a sudden cardiac arrest.
An AED is designed to be used by anyone, you do not have to be trained in first aid, however it is good to be familiar with how to use the AED. The unit will give you clear verbal instructions on how to use it and what you need to do, the AED pads also provide an image on where they need to be place.
If a person is unresponsive (they are not responding to you when you talk to them or squeeze their shoulder) or not breathing normally (gasping or no breathing at all) you should place the AED on them.
AEDs display an icon to shows its status for use, this can be a flashing green light, a solid colour a tick or the word ‘OK’. If that AED is not displaying a status symbol or is beeping, this may indicate that something is wrong, please contact the H&S team if you think an AED is not working.
